E2D to provide 60 laptop computers for Charlotte’s most at-risk youth
March 7, 2018 – Dozens of CMS high school students are receiving a critical tool for 21st Century success: their own computer.
E2D, Inc. - Eliminate the Digital Divide – will distribute 60 refurbished laptops to low-income students at Harding University High School tomorrow, part of its ongoing efforts to help needy students overcome some of the barriers which can hamper their education and limit future opportunities.
“For Charlotte’s most vulnerable youth, ‘the Digital Divide’ is a frightening reality which will determine their future,” said Pat Millen, E2D Founder and President. “We are committed to providing these young people access to 21st century learning tools that will support academic success and help prepare them for college, careers, and beyond.”
In addition to enabling the recipients to connect to the digital world, the laptop distribution will also reflect a second success for the local non-profit, for the units were refurbished through an E2D program which trains CMS students as computer lab technicians.
“We are so proud to work with E2D, not least because CMS student Franny Millen started this nonprofit while in middle school at CMS,” said Mary McCray, CMS Board Chairperson. “E2D is helping students in need by providing digital access and the skills they will need to succeed during school and in their careers. We are also very honored to have the strong partnership and support of AT&T.”
This laptop distribution is underwritten by a contribution from AT&T, which has a long history of supporting and expanding educational opportunities that help students succeed both inside and outside the classroom.
“We strongly believe that every child has the potential to achieve something great, regardless of your neighborhood or economic situation, said Carlos E. Sanchez, External Affairs Director for AT&T North Carolina. “For a student, a computer is the key to unlocking the future and to fulfilling hopes and dreams. We are pleased to support E2D in their work to make a difference in the lives of these students and their families.”
Editors’ Note:
The distribution will be March 8, 2018, from 10AM-12PM at Harding High School in Charlotte, NC. For questions, or to confirm attendance, please contact Jenny Myers at jenny@e-2-d.org or 215-704-7627.
Please be advised that although many of the recipients are currently homeless, there will be no references to homelessness or McKinney-Vento status throughout the distribution. To protect the students’ dignity, we ask that you help us respect and maintain this important level of discretion.
